Modelling a simple Flower Vase with Spin tool in Blender 2.8

Hello friends in this tutorial we will model a simple flower vase in Blender 2.8 and I will introduce you to the awesome spin tool in Blender 2.8. So lets start.

First open Blender 2.8 then select the default cube. It will be selected by default, if not simply select it with LEFT CLICK.

Now press TAB to go into edit mode and select all vertices by pressing A or you can go to the modelling tab. In modelling tab selected object will go into edit mode by default.

Now press ALT + M. A merge menu will open. Select At Center from the menu. After pressing it will merge all vertices at center.

Now select the single vertex. It will be selected by default. If not select it with pressing A on your keyboard, it will select all vertices but because there is only one vertex it will select only that single vertex.

Now press NUMPAD 1 to go into front orthographic view. Then keep extruding the single vertex and make it look like a Flower vase from side view but only one side. And select all of the vertices. See the below picture.

Now click on the Spin Tool in the left toolbar after selecting all vertices.  Then rotate the view by pressing and dragging Middle Mouse Button to go into Perspective view.

Now you will see two + sign appear on the screen. Simply Click and drag any of  the + icon. You will notice the selected vertices extruding around the center of the origin. but it is not true. Actually it is extruding around the Cursor.

Okay so click and drag any of the + sign slightly and stop dragging. Now a Spin option will appear on the bottom left corner.

Click on the arrow to open the Spin menu. Now input 18 in Steps and 360 in Angle. It will close the vertices completely. See the below picture.

Now select all vertices by pressing A and press Right Click. Then select Remove Double Vertices from there. It will Merge all vertices that are touching each other. Because there are two set of  vertices in the same location. One the original vertices that you created by extruding. Another one is created when you use the spin tool and set the angle to 360. So the first set of vertices (That you created) extruded around the center and the extruded vertices again placed on the first set of vertices. So there are now 2 set of vertices in the same place.

That's why we have to remove the duplicated vertices.

The model is now almost complete. Now go into Object mode by pressing TAB and press Right click then select Shade Smooth. It will smooth the surface of the object rather than the flat surface.

If you notice some unexpected smooth result it is simply because of the object normals. Normals means face direction in 3D. Because we used spin tool some faces are facing opposite direction. That's why we are noticing this type of result.

Now click on the Overlays option and select Face Orientation from there.

Now you will notice the object is go into Blue and Red color. The blue color means the faces are facing outside and the red color means the faces are facing inside. We just have to fix the red color into blue.

We can do this by pressing TAB to go into edit mode and selecting all Vertices by pressing A. Now press SHIFT + N, you will see a option called "Make Normals Consistent" on the bottom left corner. If you see that the full object color is go into Red mode just click Inside option to make it Blue or vice versa.

Then deselect Face Orientation from the Overlays option. Now you will see the smoothing error has fixed.

Solidify and Subdivision Surface Modifier

We will make the Flower vase model more realistic by applying two modifiers. First Click on the modifiers tab in the properties menu.

Modifiers tab Blender 2.8

Then click on Add Modifier and select Solidify from there. After that click on the Thickness value and input 0.15 from your number pad. It will make the model look thicker than before. Now click on apply to make this change permanent.

Now again go into Modifiers tab select Subdivision Surface from the drop down menu and change the number inside View option to 2. It will make the model more smoother and realistic.

So the model is now fully complete. In the later tutorial we will texture this flower vase in Blender 2.8 Shader editor.
